How to Fix Sticky Drawers and Loose Joints

Two of the most common vintage furniture problems, solved with simple reversible repairs that get drawers gliding and joints solid again.

Published April 1, 2026

Sticky drawers and wobbly joints are the most common complaints on vintage furniture, and both are quick, satisfying fixes. The repairs below are reversible and use materials kind to old wood, so you can restore function without harming the piece.

What you will need

  • Paste wax, beeswax, or a candle stub
  • Fine sandpaper
  • Wood glue
  • Bar or strap clamps
  • A rubber mallet and scrap wood
  • A damp cloth for cleanup

Step 1: Diagnose the sticky drawer

Pull the drawer out and look for shiny rub marks on the runners. Those bright spots show exactly where the wood is binding against the frame.

Step 2: Lubricate the runners

Rub paste wax, beeswax, or a candle stub along the runners and the matching surface inside the case. If the drawer is swollen, lightly sand the shiny high spots first, then wax. Wood lubricants beat oil, which attracts grime.

Step 3: Take loose joints apart

For a wobbly chair or table, gently work the loose joint fully apart rather than gluing over the old, failed bond. Scrape away the brittle old glue so fresh adhesive can grip clean wood.

Step 4: Re-glue and clamp

Apply wood glue to both surfaces, fit the joint together, and seat it with a mallet against scrap wood. Clamp firmly, wipe away squeeze-out with a damp cloth, and leave it overnight to cure fully.

Tip: Never force a tight joint with a metal hammer directly on the wood. Always cushion the blow with scrap wood to avoid dents and bruising.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best lubricant for a sticking wood drawer? +

Use a wax such as paste wax, beeswax, or a plain candle stub on the runners. Avoid oil, which soaks in, attracts dust, and gums up over time.

Should I glue over a loose joint or take it apart? +

Take it apart and scrape off the old glue. Fresh adhesive needs clean wood to bond properly, so gluing over a failed joint rarely holds.

How long should glued joints clamp? +

Clamp firmly and leave the joint overnight to cure fully. Rushing the cure is the most common reason a repair fails again.
