How to Restore the Shine on Vintage Chrome
Bring dull, lightly rusted vintage chrome back to a mirror finish with a gentle clean, a clever foil trick, and a protective polish.

Vintage chrome on appliances, trim, and furniture legs looks dead when it is dull and freckled with surface rust, but the plating underneath is often still sound. A gentle clean, a simple foil-and-water trick, and a protective polish can restore a real mirror shine without scratching the thin chrome layer.
What you will need
- Mild dish soap and warm water
- Soft cloths and a soft toothbrush
- Aluminum foil
- A dedicated chrome or metal polish
- A microfiber buffing cloth
- A thin protective wax or sealant
Step 1: Wash off the grime
Clean the chrome with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, using a soft toothbrush to reach trim and edges. Dry it well so you can see exactly where any rust spots remain.
Step 2: Tackle surface rust with foil
Crumple a piece of aluminum foil, dip it in water, and rub the rust spots gently. The foil reacts with the rust and lifts it without scratching the chrome, which is softer than steel wool would allow.
Step 3: Polish to a shine
Apply a small amount of chrome polish to a soft cloth and work it over the surface in straight passes. Let it haze, then buff hard with microfiber to bring up that signature mirror finish.
Step 4: Seal and protect
Wipe on a thin protective wax to slow future rust and fingerprints, then buff again. A sealed surface stays bright far longer between cleanings.
Caution: Never use steel wool or abrasive pads on chrome, as they cut fine scratches into the plating. Once chrome is worn through to the base metal, only re-plating can restore it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does aluminum foil remove rust from chrome? +
Dipped in water, foil reacts with the rust and lifts it while being softer than the chrome plating, so it cleans without leaving the scratches that steel wool would.
Can I use steel wool on chrome? +
No. Steel wool and abrasive pads cut fine scratches into thin chrome plating. Stick to the foil trick and a dedicated chrome polish to keep the mirror finish intact.
Can worn-through chrome be restored at home? +
Not really. Once chrome wears through to the base metal, only professional re-plating restores it. Home methods only revive plating that is still intact under the rust.
